演 題: My 20-year journey in the global PV rush

講演概要:The development of the solar photovoltaic (PV) industry in Taiwan over the past twenty years,
along with the global PV rush, was dramatic. In 2001, I was lucky to initiate the first government-funded PV project with Sino-American Silicon Products Inc. (SAS);the semiconductor industry was in recession during that period time. This project was to develop an efficient pulling technology for mono-crystalline silicon ingots for PV, and it turned out to be a hit to the company. Since then, with the emerging of global PV market due to the incentive feed-in tariff in Europe, a few new PV startupsin Taiwan were established, especially in the segment of solar cells, such as Neo Solar and Solartech Energy, Gintech, etc. However, the booming of the PV market from 2005 to 2010 let to a great shortage of polysilicon, and this also drove another wave of the huge investment in polysilicon, such asTaiwan Polysilicon Inc., and thin filmas well, such as Auria Solar and Sunshine P, etc.  I was then in charge the PV program at ITRI from 2007 to 2010to develop the technology, promote the industry, and deploy the solar energy for the island. Unfortunately, due to over expansion of PV industry in China, as well as oversupply, the PV industry started to loss profit in 2011. The high-performance multi-crystalline silicon (mc Si) was also developed during this period of time from mycollaboration with SAS. Its market share ever reached near 70% in 2017; however, the mc Si market was soon replaced by mono-crystalline silicon due to the emerging of diamond wire technology. In 2019 all the mc Si companies stopped their production, and the consolidation quickly began and the merge of Neo Solar, Gintech, and Solartech Energy into United Renewal Energy Co. (URE) was the biggest one. Moreover, during these years, thin film was not able to compete with silicon, all the thin-film PV companies closed down by2020, including TSMC Solar Inc. In the meantime, the PV deployment continued to grow, and reached almost 10 GW by the end of 2022, while the National target by 2025 is 20 GW. In this presentation, I would like to share my journey with you, as a founder of Taiwan Photovoltaic IndustryAssociation, and my prospect of PV development in Taiwan.
