Public expectation has been rising on the promotion of energy saving by replacing incandescent/fluorescent lamps with LED or organic electro luminescence (OEL) devices possessing higher energy utilization efficiency. In order to achieve significant popularization of such next-generation illumination devices, development of high-efficiency and high-quality materials is necessary with regard to device longevity, luminescence efficiency and color rendering properties, and also required is material- and process-cost reduction; fundamental research and development activities toward those ends are undertaken to achieve those objectives. Activities in the present project will include research and development of technologies regarding light takeout and device sealing for efficiency/quality improvement, process control measures for cost reduction, thin film formation, as well as those on substrate/electrode/organic layers comprising OEL devices.
