{Finished}The 37th ROEL Lecture Session (Tenure Tracking Mini Symposium)

Starting from 3:30 on June 28th, 2012, the 37th ROEL Lecture Session (Tenure Tracking Mini Symposium) was held at Conference room on 4th floor in Research Center for Organic Electronics, inviting two lecturers, one is Assi. prof. Itaru Osaka, in Graduate School of Faculty of Engineering, Hiroshima University, and another is Asso. prof. Hiroshi Yabu, in Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials, Tohoku University.
The first half of the cenference (3:30-4:30pm) was the lecture entitled "Developing Semi-Conductive Polymers in High-Performance By Means of Molecular Science", given by Assistant prof. Itaru Osaka. And the second half (4:30-5:30pm) was the lecture, "Creating the nanostructure in polymer micro-particle", given by Associate prof. Hiroshi Yabu.
A total of 40 researchers and students attended to the cenference, and it finished in success.

Subject

Developing Semi-Conductive Polymers in High-Performance By Means of Molecular Science/Creating the nanostructure in polymer micro-particle

(1) 3:30pm to 4:30pm
Lecturer: Assistant prof. Itaru Osaka, in Graduate School of Faculty of Engineering, Hiroshima University
Subject of Lecture: Developing Semi-Conductive Polymers in High-Performance By Means of Molecular Science
Outline: Recently, the development of conjugated polymers and semi-conductive polymers has been very competitive because the performance of organic electronics, especially organic transistors and solar batteries, are highly improved. Under these circumstances, the focus is primarily given to the features of polymer devices. However, in order to create semi-conductive polymers in genuine high performance, it is very important to understand the real essence of polymer molecule, that is the molecular structures of the main-chain of pi-conjugated system and substitution groups of side-chains, and structural correlation with crystallization/orientation in thin-film, or molecular structures and electronic structure, carrier transport, and mechanical correlation with device features.
In this lecture, the following subjects are debated: the development of new semi-conductive polymers, including the development of new pi-electronic structure, or the high performance of organic transistors and organic thin-film solar batteries by optimizing the polymer structure, and the structural and functional correlation of polymers.

(2) 4:30pm to 5:30pm
Lecturer: Associate prof. Hiroshi Yabu, in Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials, Tohoku University
Subject of Lecture: Creating the nanostructure in polymer micro-particle
Outline: Polymer micro-particles (from nano to micro size) are practical materials, and they can be used in various fields. Until today, the methods, such as the emulsion polymerization and the suspension polymerization, are used to control its precise size, and those methods also have been good for surface modification and functionalization. On the other hand, the internal structure of polymer micro-particle received less attention. If the various structures can be created inside the polymer micro-particle, we can expect the development of applications that we have never seen before.
The lecturer himself developed the “Self-Organized Precipitation (SORP) method,” which is his unique method of creating polymer micro-particles. In this lecture, he uses this method to create micro-particles from polymer blends and block copolymer, introducing the internal structural control based on the phase separation of polymer and the development of its application.
